The United Nations (UN) has been an important partner for Albania since the early 1990s, supporting the country’s democratic transition and development processes. Through its Cooperation Framework with the Albanian Government, the UN has worked to align national priorities with the 2030 Agenda, providing normative, policy, advocacy, and capacity-building support. Its engagement has spanned key areas such as human capital development, sustainable economic development, governance and the rule of law, the promotion of human rights, gender equality, and environmental protection.
In January 2007, Albania was selected as one of eight pilot countries for the “Delivering as One UN” initiative, aimed at fostering a more coordinated and efficient approach by the UN system at the national level. Since then, the United Nations has operated under the “One UN” model, coordinated by the Office of the Resident Coordinator and bringing together 19 specialized agencies, funds, and programs. This model has enabled a more integrated use of resources and strengthened coherence between national priorities and international development agendas.
Over the years, UN support has been comprehensive, covering democratic governance, the strengthening of accountability institutions, the protection of human rights and gender equality, the social inclusion of vulnerable communities, environmental sustainability, economic growth, and youth empowerment. The UN has also provided significant assistance for disaster preparedness and response, consolidating its role as a strategic partner on Albania’s path toward sustainable development and European integration.
