The United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has been an important partner for Albania since 1991, contributing to the country’s democratic transition and sustainable development. Initially channelled through the Department for International Development (DFID), British assistance has evolved over time toward projects led by the British Embassy in Tirana as well as cooperation with international organizations. Support has been provided primarily in the form of grants and flexible instruments, including the Westminster Foundation for Democracy and UK Export Finance.

The cooperation has been multifaceted, encompassing justice reform, the fight against corruption, border security, economic development, and education. Concrete interventions have supported capacity-building for Albanian institutions, improved financial investigations, enhanced police training, and strengthened local governance. There has also been support for vocational education and the development of local economies, helping to create new opportunities for citizens.

Current priorities in cooperation with the United Kingdom include reducing irregular migration, strengthening democratic governance, enhancing cybersecurity, and fostering sustainable economic development. This enduring partnership reflects the UK’s commitment to supporting Albania in consolidating democratic institutions and advancing toward European integration.
