The European Investment Bank (EIB)

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has been active in Albania since 1995, becoming one of the country’s most important financial partners for infrastructure development and economic modernization. As the European Union’s bank, the EIB supports projects that help strengthen interregional connectivity, accelerate economic growth, and advance the process of European integration.

EIB investments in Albania have focused primarily on strategic infrastructure sectors such as road and rail transport, energy and renewables, and water management and wastewater treatment. These interventions have aimed to improve citizens’ quality of life, increase energy efficiency, protect the environment, and reinforce Albania’s links to the EU single market.

Another important area of EIB support is the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which form the backbone of the Albanian economy. Through credit lines and other financial instruments, the Bank has helped businesses boost competitiveness, create new jobs, and adapt to market challenges. In this way, the EIB contributes not only to economic development but also to Albania’s alignment with European Union standards and practices.
