Switzerland established formal relations with Albania in the early 1990s and, since 1992, has maintained a presence through development programs managed by SDC (the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation) and SECO (the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs). Support has been provided primarily in the form of grants and has focused on sectors that are priorities for the country’s development.
The main areas of cooperation include local governance, education and vocational training, healthcare, and the sustainable management of natural resources. Through these interventions, Switzerland has helped strengthen institutional capacities and increase civic participation, promoting models of transparent, inclusive, and accountable governance. Particular attention has been devoted to decentralization and local public finances, empowering municipalities and enhancing their capacity to deliver higher-quality services to citizens.
Beyond socio-economic development, Switzerland has been a strong supporter of Albania’s European integration process, linking its assistance to structural reforms and the modernization of public services in line with European Union standards. This cooperation has positioned Switzerland as a strategic partner in Albania’s path toward sustainable development and European integration.
