This document presents the implementation of the Reform Agenda step introducing Near Field Communication (NFC)-based electronic identity verification as part of Albania’s Digital Identity Wallet. The solution enables secure verification of users by reading and authenticating biometric identity cards and electronic passports through integration with the e-Albania platform and advanced security mechanisms for validating both identity documents and user credentials.
The implementation includes cryptographic verification of biometric documents, cross-validation of identity data against official records, encrypted local storage of the verified digital identity on the user’s device, and protection through PIN and biometric authentication. The functionality has been comprehensively tested and establishes the technical foundation for the further development of the Digital Identity Wallet and its integration with electronic public services, in line with European Union digital identity requirements.
