Albania became a member of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) on 18 December 1991, with the first operations beginning in 1992. Since then, the EBRD has been one of the country’s most significant partners and financiers, helping to accelerate the transition toward an open and sustainable economy. Its activities span both the public and private sectors, combining financing with technical assistance and international expertise.
Over the past decades, the EBRD has invested in key sectors of the Albanian economy, including energy (with an emphasis on renewables and distribution modernisation), financial services and support for small and medium-sized enterprises, transport and municipal infrastructure, manufacturing, tourism, natural resources, and agribusiness. Through these projects, the Bank has helped modernise energy networks, improve business access to finance, and enhance the competitiveness of strategic sectors of the economy.
A notable aspect of the EBRD’s engagement in Albania is its support for the green transition and regional integration. The Bank has championed investments that promote energy efficiency, sustainable urban development, and responsible natural resource management, helping the country align with European Union standards. Through this comprehensive approach, the EBRD remains a strategic partner for Albania’s long-term development.
